Connecting the elaboration and the content description

This elaboration supports students to understand that it is ethically appropriate and required to consult with the relevant First Nations Australians who hold native title or co-manage the land on the Country/Place they are planning on conducting field investigations on.

Detail

This elaboration provides students with an opportunity to develop this Science inquiry practice while addressing intercultural science inquiry practices relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures within the context of the following content description(s) from the Science understanding and/or Science as a human endeavour strand(s).

Science, Year 6 | Science understanding – Biological sciences

AC9S6U01

Investigate the physical conditions of a habitat and analyse how the growth and survival of living things is affected by changing physical conditions.

Students could plan a field investigation. When planning the field work it is ethically appropriate to consult with the relevant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people whose traditional country they are conducting science on, such as geological surveys. These types of collaborations ensure that scientists are not accessing or disturbing heritage sites and artefacts.
